Ogg is a media file format. Like Quicktime or Windows Media it can contain audio, video and other types of information. The Ogg files you will likely come across on the Archive are encoded with the Vorbis audio codec, they are fully referred to as Ogg Vorbis files, but most people abbreviate and just call them Oggs.

Ogg Vorbis audio compression is similar to mp3, it achieves smaller file sizes for equivalent file sizes. More importantly, the technology is not patented, thus any party may write software that can encoode or play Ogg files without having to pay royalties.
